Why gamify a course?

What can you do when your learners are not engaged enough? When they don't focus on the essentials, miss tasks, or lack consistency...

Gamification is a UX design tool that addresses these issues.

Gamification involves using game mechanics in more formal contexts. The goal? Encourage certain behaviors, guide activity... and add a touch of fun!

In education, it is used to achieve specific objectives:

  • → Solve engagement issues: Define the behaviors you want to encourage (completing tasks more regularly, interacting with others, etc.). Then, considering your learners' profiles, implement mechanics that reward these behaviors.
  • → Better knowledge retention: Gamification immerses learners in more dynamic contexts. By learning through interaction, they retain new knowledge more effectively.
  • → Create a distinctive educational signature: Gamification also strengthens your branding! By promoting the idea that learning can be fun and inspiring, you can build a community around your courses. It's also an effective way to stand out!
  • → Reward learners: Structuring a game system that values their progress creates a virtuous cycle encouraging them to learn more—throughout your courses and beyond!

What we offer

Needs analysis

Each course is unique. And gamification isn't a one-size-fits-all solution.

We take the time to clarify your needs, challenges, and collaborate on a relevant gamification strategy.

Gamification is a toolbox—not all tools are used every time! We guide you to design gamification that makes sense and has real impact.

Content creation or adjustment

Once the strategy and design are completed, production begins.

We can create gamified learning content from scratch or build upon your existing material.

When using existing content, we transform it (in substance and form) to integrate seamlessly into the gamification.

Deployment on our gamified LMS

Once your course is gamified, it needs deployment. Gamification mechanics often rely on an LMS—for instance, to display an activity graph or automatically assign badges.

That's why we developed two LMS platforms: one streamlined for short courses, and a more comprehensive one for managing long gamified curricula!

Are your contents on another LMS? We can help you migrate them.

How to implement gamified courses?

Once your courses are ready, they must be deployed to your learners.

Gamification may require automation, random mechanics, interactive visual interfaces... Hence, an LMS is generally necessary to orchestrate all this.

Over the years, we have developed two LMS platforms to support our gamified courses:

Logo Rbean

Rbean LMS

Rbean LMS enables you to manage long courses or those with more advanced learning scenarios.

For example, Rbean LMS allows you to unlock topics step by step, introduce competitions among students, have assessments reviewed by juries, manage resources in detail, etc.

With Rbean LMS, we can create detailed gamified scenarios together for an exceptional learning experience!

Logo Soba

Soba LMS

If your learning scenarios are simpler, Soba LMS is for you. Soba LMS offers fewer features but a lighter and streamlined interface.

However, Soba LMS still allows you to manage your learner cohorts and provide an advanced educational experience through gamification.

Learners can unlock badges, see their progress on a project graph, and fill progress bars as they succeed in digital escape games!

We offer a seamless gamification process, supporting you from design to integration on one of our dedicated solutions. This guarantees a fully integrated experience for you and your learners!

Examples of gamified projects we've developed

We have gamified all types of projects—from short modules to multi-year curricula. Here's a small selection:

Creating an educational escape game... like WorkVentures

Creation date: 2023
Course duration: 2h

To kick off a cybersecurity introduction day with impact, what better than experiencing a cyberattack?

We created an engaging escape game for WorkVentures where "the mechanics convey the message." The game was structured to mirror real steps cybersecurity experts take in response to an attack.

Result: a fun and impactful activity leading to a highly educational debrief.

Designing a gamified curriculum... like Intek

Creation date: 2018
Course duration: 2 years

Intek is an IT school built from scratch, where we carefully balanced gamification.

Here, the need wasn't to drive motivation—already supported by quality mentoring—but to foster metacognition and curiosity development.

Students learned to manage resources and follow their curiosity through side quests (called “dashes”). Gamification isn't all or nothing—it depends on the objectives and project!

Vue du graphe de projet de l'école 42

Gamifying an existing curriculum... like at Ecole 42

Creation date: 2015
Course duration: ~2 years

A school where students are entirely autonomous naturally brings intrinsic motivation challenges!

In 2015, we gamified the existing pedagogical architecture to provide guidance and structure, naturally supporting student motivation.

A fascinating project with results that contribute strongly to 42’s educational identity. Learn more through our case study.

Gamifying an activity... like ESSEC

Creation date: 2024
Course duration: 3h

For its African geopolitics module, ESSEC wanted to create an engaging case study.

We transformed the expert's content into a collaborative role-playing game. Learners could experience and grasp the module’s key messages... through practice!

An emotional experience adding depth to the module, widely praised by learners.

Examples of gamification tools we use

Creating a project graph

Instead of representing your content as a simple activity list, we represent it as a "project graph." A project graph—not only creating a memorable visual—helps learners see their progress, visualize course branches, and better understand the learning pathway.

Awarding achievements, badges, and certificates.

To demonstrate progress or recognize outstanding results, we use “reward” systems. Rewards come in different forms depending on how learners are to be praised: a certificate for completing the course, an achievement for a perfect project score, etc.

Learners can also share these success markers on LinkedIn or their CV to showcase their achievements in your course!

Vue des compétences d'un apprenant

Skill point tracking

Every learner is different, and it's essential to represent their preferences and skills.

By identifying the sub-skills involved in their activities and awarding points in each category, we can visualize learners' progress with skill bars that fill up over time! This objectively profiles each learner's skillset.

Using an internal currency

Another way to reward learners and motivate them further is by using an internal course currency. This currency is earned through specific learning activities.

Learners can spend it on educational perks (choosing teammates for group projects, unlocking hints, extending deadlines, etc.) or goodies if available!

Creating gamified content like digital escape games

Make your content delivery more fun with digital escape games! They help learners memorize content better by immersing them in a rich environment and learning through practice.

Simply creating realistic content (with events that modify the subject, professional formats like briefs, etc.) leads to a more dynamic and motivating experience.

Group work

Group work adds a new dimension to learning: it develops soft skills, enables diverse learning through role-playing, and spreads knowledge within the cohort.

We make it easy to implement various group dynamics (e.g., automatically assigning roles within a group, providing different resources to different group members, etc.).

Got coding content? We go further!

Auto-grading, coding competitions, and executable code directly in the LMS... Teaching code is at our core expertise. We provide all the tools needed to make IT training more dynamic!

Each learning modality has its uses, advantages and disadvantages.

It is the context that determines which one fits best in a given sequence.
